Spring Break 2015 - Fruita, CO

For spring break we wanted to go camping, but the first week in April is still pretty chilly, especially in the mountains! We headed out to Fruita, CO, which is a dessert climate and typically much warmer than the front range where we live. The day we drove out was very windy, but otherwise the weather was beautiful! The nights were cold, but we were warm in our tent and enjoyed hot breakfasts each morning. The days warmed up quickly and  the terrain of the Colorado National Monument was amazing.
A chilly and windy lunch in Glenwood Canyon

It feels great to get out of the car and stretch my legs!

The very cold Colorado River.

"I really want to touch that water!"

The tent all set up - what a challenge with all the wind!!

We were at a walk-up site and they provided these wheel barrows that were pretty awesome.

Time for a round of Go Fish.

This is serious business.

Good morning!

A little sand play before breakfast.

The inaugural use of our very own two burner coleman stove!

What a beautiful setting.

Official bacon cookers at work.

There is nothing like a hot breakfast on a cold morning when you are camping.

Day 1 at Colorado National Monument on Window Rock Trail - check out that view!

Check out my treasure.

Coke Oven Formations

Start of our second hike on the Coke Oven Trail.

The rock is smooth.

Lunch bread

We made it!

Almost back to the car.

Thanks for the lift Daddy!

We always need sand handy. They happily play in it for hours.

Yummy breakfast in the works.

Day 2 - Heading out on the Corkscrew Trail, one of the original trails created by John Otto in the Monument.

Hi little friend.

Super Hikers - the new backpacks really helped!

A rock we can sit in!!

The highest point on the hike - time to go down the corkscrew.

This was really incredible and a corkscrew is the perfect description of what the trail is like.

We made it down, now for the last half mile on the flats. Of course, this is when our little hikers legs got tired so fortunately we had two sets of shoulders to carry two tired girls. Not bad for the girls longest hike to date, 3.5 miles.
